Position Summary
Provides direct patient care in the outpatient setting as an advanced practice nurse.  Functions autonomously and in collaboration with the surgical team (general and bariatric). The nurse practitioner utilizes scientific principles, theoretical knowledge, and clinical experience along with national standards of care as a framework for managing patient care.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities  include the following.  To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.  Other duties may be assigned.

  1. Assessment of health status
      - obtaining a relevant health and medical history
      - performing a physical exam based on presenting history
      - ordering diagnostic procedures based on presenting history
      - identifying medical risk factors

  1. Diagnosis
      - utilizes critical thinking in the diagnosis process
      - synthesizes and analyzes collected data
      - formulates a differential diagnosis
      - establishes priorities to meet the medical needs of the patient

  1. Development of a treatment plan
      - orders/interprets additional diagnostic tests
      - prescribes/orders appropriate pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic interventions
      - develops a patient education plan
      - determines appropriate consultation/referral to other health professionals and community agencies

  1. Follow-up and evaluation
      - maintains a process for systematic follow-up
      - determines the effectiveness of the treatment plan and modifies the plan as needed
      - maintains appropriate documentation of patient records
      - communicates with the surgical team and referring providers

  1. Related duties and responsibilities
      - maintains active continuing medical education requirements for NP certification and DC                                                    
      - demonstrates knowledge and experience in diagnosis and procedure coding
- performs other work-related duties as necessary

A Master’s degree in nursing, and successful completion of an accredited nurse practitioner program of study is necessary. Credentialed as an advanced practice nurse practitioner by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) or the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). Current licensure as a registered nurse and advanced practice nurse in the District of Columbia is required.
Two years of recent clinical experience as an advanced practice nurse practitioner. Experienced in general surgery and Bariatric is required.

Ability to input data into the computer, and analyze data as requested.  Must be able to communicate providing verbal feedback in a professional manner.  Must be able to follow and understand instructions, and react favorably in all work situations.  Must be mentally adaptable and flexible in dealing with a variety of people.
