Job Description

Position Summary
To perform an expanded clinical role in providing nursing care.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities  include the following. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.  Other duties may be assigned.

  • Performs well child and adult history and physical examinations.
  • Performs uncomplicated prenatal and post-natal care, minor illness management, and stabilized chronic care.
  • Participates in formulation of problem list.
  • Write independent nursing orders.
  • Coordinates and monitors a health maintenance program for patients.
  • Counsels patients in family planning and general health education.
  • Performs emergency triage of patients.
  • Coordinates dietary needs of patients with Therapeutic Dietitians.
  • Counsels families with mental health problems.
  • Plans and coordinates continuing care of patients between hospital, clinic and home or nursing home.
  • Initiates the referral of patients to other departments and agencies.

Education           
A Bachelor’s degree in nursing, completion of an approved course of study as a nurse practitioner is necessary. Current D.C. licensure as a Registered Nurse is necessary.
 
Experience        
Six to eight years of experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience is necessary.

Competencies  
Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills. Must be able to communicate providing verbal feedback in a professional manner.  Must be able to follow and understand instructions, and react favorably in all work situations.  Must have strong interpersonal skills and be mentally adaptable and flexible in dealing with a variety of people at various levels within and outside the MFA.

Supervision Received
General supervision is received weekly to monthly from an Administrator, Associate Director, Department of Nursing; or a physician, dependent on location of position; clinical supervision is received weekly from physicians; work results are reviewed weekly.

Supervision Exercised
Functional supervision may be exercised over professional nurses.
