Job Description

Position Summary
Performs high quality digital screening mammographic studies utilizing knowledge of patient history, breast anatomy and physiology; and the most current positioning and technical applications of digital mammography. Evaluates mammographic images for diagnostic quality and technical accuracy.  Conducts daily FDA required quality control testing for a digital mammography unit in a mobile setting.  Evaluates the mammographic unit for proper operation.  Notifies Executive Coordinator if equipment is not functioning within required parameters.  Transports digital and CAD images via laptop computer safely back to GW/MFA and down loads these images to the SecurView workstation for interpretation by the radiologists.  Log all patients performed daily in screening log book.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities  include the following. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.  Other duties may be assigned.

FDA Regulated Quality Control Tests performed by technologist on days working on the Mammovan:

  1. Expose and evaluate daily phantom image at acquisition station and once weekly at the SecurView
       Workstation.
  1. Expose and evaluate two flat fields for artifacts of the detector daily.
  2. Compute the SNR (signal-to-noise ratio), and the CNR (contrast-to-noise ratio) daily.
  3. Perform the Compression Thickness Indicator test daily.
  4. View and record results of weekly tests of the SecurView workstation.
  5. Complete a Mechanical System Checklist daily (every time the unit is moved to a location).
  6. Complete Visual Checklist monthly.
  7. Complete Repeat/Reject analysis quarterly.
  8. Compression Test is performed semi-annually.
  9. Flat field calibration is completed at least once a week, but highly recommended to be done every time the unit is moved.

*These tests are specific to the Lorad Selenia Full-Field Digital Mammography unit as stated in the
Selenia Operator’s Manual and according to MQSA regulations.

Patient Communication and Education:
  1. Respond to client questions regarding mammography, its radiation dose and its role in detecting breast abnormalities.
  2. Explain the procedure for the communication of mammography results to the client.

 
Qualifications

Education           
Graduation from a two year AMA approved school of Radiologic Technology is required.  Must be certified in both Radiology and Mammography by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT).  Maryland and Virginia radiation licenses required. Certification in CPR is recommended.

Experience        
Minimum two years experience as a mammographer. A minimum of 15 continuing education credits in mammography every three years is required by the FDA. Must perform a minimum of 100 mammography exams per year to keep mammography certification current.  Eight hours of initial training in digital mammography is required. Previous experience with the Lorad Selenia full-field digital unit is recommended as well as previous supervisory experience

Competencies  
Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills. Must be able to communicate providing verbal feedback in a professional manner.  Must be able to follow and understand instructions, and react favorably in all work situations.  Must have strong interpersonal skills and be mentally adaptable and flexible in dealing with a variety of people at various levels within and outside the MFA. Ability to input data into the computer, and analyze data as requested.
