Job Description

Position Summary

Manage and oversee all aspects of departmental administration, academic and non-academic, including financial, faculty affairs, credentialing, residency, human resources and other diverse issues. Provide leadership and management when coordinating these activities; to collaborate with Department Chair, Practice Group Administrator (PGA) and other members of the MFA administrative team in achieving the goals and objectives of the department of Pathology and the MFA.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following.  To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.  Other duties may be assigned.

  • Oversees the day-to-day activities, leadership and general management of the department operations, financial performance and budget. This includes overseeing the MFA phlebotomy lab and ensuring a high level of productivity across the department.
  • Manages the human resource functions for non-clinical staff and phlebotomy staff including hiring, performance evaluation, counseling, terminations, promotions, wage/salary adjustments, disciplinary decisions and grievance procedure; manages, in collaboration with the Department Chair, the logistics of administrative human resource functions for clinical staff; assists in the development and implementation of programs designed to retain staff and enhance team work among working groups; oversees payroll activities.
  • Directs/oversees all financial management activities including accounts payable and the development of annual operating and capital budgets; monitors performance against the budget on a monthly basis, explaining variances and taking corrective action as necessary. Generates an action plan to address financial issues.
  • Responsible for producing and regularly generating reports and analytics to assess all aspects of department operations to include monthly physician productivity reports.
  • Provide oversight for department’s revenue cycle to include overseeing coding/reimbursement staff, generating and reviewing multiple reports, liaising directly with the business office and with the hospital/s for issues related to registration or the transfer of data between systems. Ensures charges are captured timely and feedback on documentation is provided to physicians.
  • In collaboration with the Department Chair will develop, revise and implement standard operating procedures and/or work flows, which may apply to all aspects of department operations.
  • In collaboration with the Department Chair and PGA will assist in the development of new business and service lines to include establishing a Pathology Outreach program for the department to include developing proformas, financial analysis and the establishment of new procedures and workflows.
  • Prioritize workload demands, establishing productivity expectations, and cross covering functions within and across areas as needed in the Department.
  • Continuously develops, reviews, implements and re-accesses plans for achieving the goals and objectives of the department of Pathology consistent with the strategic plan and changing needs of the MFA.
  • Works with the Executive/Residency Coordinator for data analysis in preparing monthly and ad hoc statistical reports, accompanied by recommendations for problem resolution as appropriate.
  • Assists staff, physicians and patients with resolution of problems at the team level whenever possible.
  • Participates in meeting identified quality assurance objectives.

Qualifications

Education            

  • A Bachelors Degree in Business Administration or related field necessary.
  • Master’s degree in Health Care Administration or an equivalent combination of training and experience is preferred.

 Experience         

  • Three to six years of progressive management experience to include patient registration, insurance verification, patient care support services management and supervisory experience is necessary.
  • Experience in Pathology or hospital based specialties is a plus.
