Position Summary
To provide immediate/urgent care to patients under the supervision of a physician. Care includes counseling and educating patients and family members, addressing patient’s chief complaint, performing diagnostic and therapeutic tests/procedures. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Other duties may be assigned.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:
- Ensure proper diagnosis, treatment, and management of illnesses and injuries, including management of lacerations, minor trauma and orthopedic injuries.
- Obtains complete medical and psychosocial histories.
- Performs evaluation and problem identification of patients.
- Orders relevant laboratory tests, determines medication and other necessary treatments.
- Prescribing and administering medications.
- Provides appropriate health education and counseling.
- Ensuring complete and timely documentation using the EHR.
- Instructs medical students appropriate to skill level as determined by physician supervisor.
- Performs emergency triage of patients.
- Initiates the referral of patients to other departments and agencies.
Qualifications:
Education
- Current licensure as nurse practitioner/ nurse or physician assistant in appropriate jurisdiction.
- NCCPA certification is necessary.
Experience
- Some previous ED/Urgent Care or primary care experience is preferred.
- Excellent communication skills required.
- 1+ year of experience in a urgent care or primary care setting, which includes the ability to manage adult and pediatric patients.
- Must fulfill the criteria for licensure and certification as a nurse practitioner/physician assistant in the District of Columbia.
