Position Summary Provides direct patient care in the outpatient setting as an advanced practice nurse. Functions autonomously and in collaboration with the surgical team.  Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.  Other duties may be assigned.

1. Assessment of health status

      - obtaining a relevant health and medical history      - performing a physical exam based on presenting history      - ordering diagnostic procedures based on presenting history      - identifying medical risk factors

2. Diagnosis

      - utilizes critical thinking in the diagnosis process      - synthesizes and analyzes collected data      - formulates a differential diagnosis      - establishes priorities to meet the medical needs of the patient3. Development of a treatment plan      - orders/interprets additional diagnostic tests      - prescribes/orders appropriate pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic interventions      - develops a patient education plan      - determines appropriate consultation/referral to other health professionals and community agencies4. Follow-up and evaluation      - maintains a process for systematic follow-up      - determines the effectiveness of the treatment plan and modifies the plan as needed      - maintains appropriate documentation of patient records      - communicates with the surgical team and referring providers5. Related duties and responsibilities      - maintains active medical education requirements for NP certification and VA license      - demonstrates knowledge and experience in diagnosis and procedure coding      - performs other work-related duties as necessary   QualificationsThe requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Education           A Master’s degree in nursing, and successful completion of an accredited nurse practitioner program of study is necessary. Credentialed as an advanced practice nurse practitioner by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) or the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). Current licensure as a registered nurse and advanced practice nurse in Virginia is required.    Experience        Two years of recent clinical experience as an advanced practice nurse practitioner. Experienced in general surgery and Breast Care is preferred.
